How We Test & Score Gear
Transparency builds trust. This page explains exactly how we evaluate outdoor gear and arrive at our Benchmark Score — so you know what the numbers mean and why you can trust them.
The Benchmark Score System
Every product we review receives a Benchmark Score on a 1-10 scale. This isn't an arbitrary number — it's calculated from weighted criteria specific to each product category.
Scoring Criteria
While specific weights vary by category, every Benchmark Score considers:
Performance (40%)
Does the product do what it claims? For optics, this means optical clarity, detection range, and accuracy. For kayaks, it's stability, speed, and tracking. We test in real conditions — not in a lab.
Build Quality & Durability (20%)
Materials, construction, weather resistance, and how well the product holds up over time. Outdoor gear takes abuse — we evaluate whether it can handle it.
Value (20%)
Performance relative to price. A $500 product that performs like a $1,000 product scores higher here than a $2,000 product that's only marginally better than its $1,000 competitors.
Usability & Ergonomics (10%)
How intuitive is it? Can you operate it with gloves? Is the interface logical? Weight and portability matter when you're carrying gear miles into the backcountry.
Features & Extras (10%)
Additional capabilities that enhance the core experience — app connectivity, mounting options, included accessories, warranty coverage.
Our Process
- Research — We study specs, user reports, and expert opinions before testing
- Hands-on testing — Real-world use in actual hunting, fishing, and outdoor conditions
- Comparison — We test alongside competitors in the same category when possible
- Scoring — Apply our weighted criteria to arrive at the Benchmark Score
- Review — Write the review with honest pros, cons, and a clear recommendation
What We Don't Do
- Accept payment for positive reviews
- Let affiliate partnerships influence our scores
- Rewrite manufacturer marketing copy as "reviews"
- Score products we haven't thoroughly researched
